Problem Solving Policy At Tong School Problem Solving is introduced in line with 5 - 14 Guidelines. Our plan is set out in Appendix 1 and it is open to change/adaptation as we endeavour to put it into action. The thematic approach to learning, which is in place for curricular work is used, where appropriate, to enrich mathematical experience. Children are thus encouraged to use their mathematics in cross-curricular study. Learning contexts are created where children use investigative approaches and techniques. At the same time, children are introduced to Problem Solving strategies from P1 through to P7. At the infant stages this is limited to three strategies - Patterns, Listings/Combinations and Model Making. At P3/4 these strategies are re-inforced and extended, with another three strategies added - Reason Logically, Trial and Error and Guess, Check and Improve. At P5/7 stages, again the above six strategies are used, with another four introduced - Pictorial Representation, Acting it Out, Working Backwards and Making/Testing a Hypothesis. The aim is that by P7, children be familiar with and can identify and name strategies used, (Appendix 2). Children will progress through Problem Solving, as with other subjects, at differing rates. Some will need a lot of help both from class teacher and peer group. Additional practical work will be needed by those for whom logical reasoning does not come easily. A problem solving task for each level will be carried out on a weekly basis. Children will be encouraged to discuss the problem solving strategy used. Success will be celebrated at the weekly assembly. 1 Review - 2004/05 |
