Information and Communication Technology Policy

In Tong School we endorse the 5-14 National Guidelines – Information and Communication Technology, in our endeavour to provide a curriculum appropriate to the needs and aspirations of all our pupils. To prepare pupils for the real world of work, leisure and communications, we aim to equip them with the relevant and necessary skills, which will allow them to confidently use computers and the main types of software applications. We aim to use I C T in its various forms to collect, organise, manipulate and disseminate information using different media.

CLASSROOM PRACTICE

The school uses I C T to extend the range of teaching and learning strategies to facilitate access to a variety of stimulating and challenging tasks across the curriculum and to accommodate the learning needs of a continuum, from the gifted pupil to those who have a range of learning difficulties. Pupils in each of the three stages of P 1/2, P 3/4 and P 5/6/7 have access to a Dell PC in their classrooms. All computers have their own printers. Learning support pupils also have access to a PC. Suitable software has been acquired to make the use of the computer rewarding and interesting. Pupils access a wide range of experience in the use of the computer -

: word processing

: data bases and spreadsheets

: adventures and simulations

: problem solving software

: control technology

: graphics

: desktop publishing (text and graphics)

: sound manipulation

: data communications

The P3,4 classroom has a TV/combi. There is another positioned in the school hall and can be accessed by the whole school.

Access is available to the school cluster-based Roamer which is used in a variety of cross-curricular activities, particularly in Mathematics. Spellmasters are widely used throughout the school. On-going use is made of all these I T resources as and when the curriculum dictates.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT

A catalogue of school resources exists. (See Appendix 1).

NOF training is presently being undertaken.
