Homework Policy Pupils at all stages are given some homework. This is geared to the needs of the pupils and while it should be within the pupils’ capabilities, parental supervision ensures that the children are given encouragement, parents are aware of the work currently undertaken in class and tasks are completed on time. PURPOSE OF HOMEWORK 1 Encourages pupils to take responsibility for their own learning. 2 Develops good habits and self-discipline. 3 Makes use of materials and sources of information outwith the classroom. 4 Builds and extends on work done in class. 5 Prepares for classwork. 6 Consolidates work done in class. 7 Is a means by which parents can become more actively involved with their child’s formal education and also more familiar with the content of the curriculum. FREQUENCY OF HOMEWORK Children are expected to spend a period of time each evening working on homework activities. Homework is generally given on a nightly basis. CONTENT AND PROCEDURE At Primary 1 and 2 level homework will normally be reading, sounds, sentence building, handwriting and number work. It is vitally important that parents sit with the child at this stage and carry out the recommended tasks noted in the Homework Notebook and Reading Record. This format continues into Primary 3 with additional tasks as identified by the class teacher. At Primary 4 -7 level there will be further progression and development. In addition to Reading, Spelling, Maths and Language exercises, work relating to other areas of the curriculum may be given as deemed necessary by the class teacher. Any unfinished class work must be completed as homework. This ensures that each child keeps pace with the rest of his or her group. 1 At the Infant stage the class teacher will write in the child’s homework diary the work for that evening. By middle primary stage the children are expected to note down for themselves when told the homework for that evening. As education is a partnership between home and school, the homework for the week should be signed, by a parent, when they are satisfied that the work has been completed, to the child’s best ability. For this reason, if a child has any difficulty in completing any aspects of the homework, this must be drawn to the class teacher’s attention. This ensures effective partnership. If parents are in any doubt about an aspect of homework they are advised to get in touch with the class or head teacher. MARKING Written homework is always marked, by the class teacher and the result discussed with the pupil. Review Date - 2004/2005 |
