French In Tong School we endorse the National Guidelines on Modern Languages 5 - 14 in relation to the learning of a foreign language in the upper primary school. In the early learning stages of French in P6 and P7, we endeavour to provide the children with listening, talking, reading and writing activities which foster spontaneity and enjoyment, thus making the learning a pleasurable experience. Aims 1 Personal language. 2 Classroom language. 3 Cultural awareness of the country. Reading and Writing Pupils will be introduced, gradually, to the reading and writing of simple words and phrases. This will be used to a) consolidate the written word, b) introduce the pupils to the relationship between the sounds and the written form, c) develop some awareness in spelling and structure patterns. 1 Differentiation Initially, differentiation will be provided by giving extra support in listening and talking experiences. Later, tasks will be differentiated. In collaborative tasks, opportunities to encourage fluency and accuracy, will be provided. All pupils will receive support and encouragement from teachers and peers in order to build up the self confidence and self esteem which can be gained from the opportunity to communicate and interact. Assessment and Recording This will take place twice a year on strands covered during the session.
